Can I volunteer?

Can you speak to my community group?

We receive many requests for speaking engagements, and our goal is to share our work with the community. We are also a small staff with limited capacity. Please fill out our speaker request form and we will follow up with you.

Can you come to my class?

We receive many requests for research support to help uncover this foundational history of structural racism. We are working on creating tools to assist people, like you and your class, in this critical work. Your willingness to do the research is an act of repair work!

We don't have the capacity to do class presentations at this point. But we have lots of resources to help you share our work with your class.

The best overview of this history (and Mapping Prejudice) is Jim Crow of the North documentary, which reveals the history and impact of racist real estate covenants.
This TEDx talk, which also works as a great introduction: The Geography of Inequality
It might be interesting to have you and your class explore the interactive map on our website that has a searchable map of racial covenants in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. To figure out whether a house has a covenant:
- Visit our Maps & Data page and continue with the steps below.
- Scroll down to the interactive map and click on See All Covenants above the map.
- Select on the bottom right whether you want to look at Hennepin County, Ramsey County, or both.
- Use the zoom function (plus/minus) at the top to zoom into your neighborhood and house.
- Click on the property parcel to display the text of the covenant and the date it was put into place.
